MY VISION

​Non-Formal Education (NFE) has been viewed as a substitute or complement to the formal school system. Consequently, the focus of NFE has remained confined to value based themes not sufficiently explored in formal education (e.g. intercultural learning, human rights, citizenship education, environmental education...), to certain programmes mostly promoted by NGOs, foundations and international institutions and to certain groups: young people or social disadvantaged people.

The globalisation, the new information technologies, the accelerated changes of the production systems and labour markets, the challenge of life-long learning and the aspiration of a “learning society” reshape not just the objectives but as well the themes, formats and target groups of non formal educational programmes.

There is a need to broaden the understanding and scope of Non Formal Education. My experience tells me that it is not just possible but very enriching to use non formal approaches in University, to develop educational programmes with social purposes with the support of the private sector, to involve different groups in an educational activity…
